Dr. Nicholas Patrick Murphy PhD

Nicholas in La Laguna, Tenerife during his Postdoc.

Nicholas Patrick Murphy was born in London. His chemistry career began at Hammersmith & West London College between 1993-1996. He was awarded an LEA grant to study at Kingston University for a BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science 1996-2000. Between 1998-1999 he worked as a Praktikant at Cyanamid Forschung GmbH in Schwabenheim in the Fungicide Department where he worked on the amination of nitrogen heterocycles and synthesised both linear and cyclic sulfur-nitrogen compounds. In addition, he developed a chemical computer management strategy applying Beilstein Crossfire and classical literature search of lead compounds synthesis for the group chemists.

His final year project was on the synthesis of oxindoles using radical translocation/cyclisation reaction. In October 2000 he won a scholarship from Tocris-Cookson to study an MSc in Organic Synthesis at University of Sussex, Falmer. His research project was on the photosolvolysis of pyridinium bromides to furnish bicyclic nitrogen heterocycle which underwent the Meisenheimer rearrangement to yield a nitrone. In February 2003, he worked as a Technical Scientist for Genzyme Haverhill on the physicochemical study of a polyamine hydrochloride. In August 2003 he was awarded the EPSRC funding to study a PhD in Chemistry at University of Warwick. His Research was on the synthesis of oxindoles and rearranged amide by radical cyclization and rearrangement using aryl sulfonamides.

Between 2009-2014 he self-studied at Imperial College London Library.

He was awarded the SAIA National Scholarship Program between 2014-2015 to study a Postdoctoral Scholarship at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. His research was on the Michael reaction products using polymer organocatalysts.

He worked as a voluntary Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of La Laguna in 2017 on computational chemistry pharmacophore and docking experiments pertaining to CK1 Tubulin-Colchicine interactions.

Since 2017, he has worked independently on a number of research projects.

He is a member of several professional organizations including as an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Biology (AMRSB), Fellow of the Linnean Society in London (FLS), Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) Pharmaceutical Scientist Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (SRPharmS), a full member of the British Toxicology Society, and a member of the American Chemical Society.

He speaks three languages: Spanish and German to intermediate level and French to beginnners level.

His Interests are Hiking, Cycling, Gym training, travelling abroad, visiting archeological sites, and enjoys learning strategic games like Chess, Go, Backgammon, and Majjong, puzzles, history and sciences.
